James Thompson, 15, studies with Sally O’Reilly, Professor of Violin at the University of Minnesota. In the 2017-2018 competition season, James won 1st prizes in the Mary West, MTNA state division, Schubert Club, and Thursday Musical scholarship competitions. He was awarded Honorary Mention in the MTNA regional division. In past years he has also been a finalist for the Schubert Club competition and won Honorary Mention once in Thursday Musical and twice for Mary West. James was a 2017 recipient of the Schubert Club Special Music Grant program.
James has attended Bravo! Summer Strings Institute for four years. The past two summers he has also participated in Pienza Music Festival in Tuscany, Italy. He has performed in master classes given by Yair Kless, Erico Tsuchihashi, John Gilbert, Espen Lillislåtten, and Bruce Coppock.
James also performs with the Great River Strings Community Orchestra and plays for Sons of Norway, retired teachers, and the elderly in his hometown.
James plays on an Alcese Bulfari of Castellione violin generously on loan from the Virtu Foundation.
