Biography:

 

Philip Lawrence Borter performs widely as both cello soloist and small ensemble musician, taking pride in an expansive repertoire of wildly diverse styles. 

Classical performance highlights include Duo-B’s concerto debut with the Eastman Philharmonia, a subsequent appearance at the Kennedy Center, a solo appearance with the Carlos Prieto Competition Festival Orchestra in Morelia, Mexico and a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence with members of the Tokyo String Quartet in Sapporo, Japan. Recently he has also been a featured soloist with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and the Greece Symphony Orchestra (NY). In addition to his solo and chamber music work, he frequently toured nationally as a member of the crossover cello ensemble Break of Reality. Alongside Ms. Hirono Sugimoto, he serves as Co-Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Duo-B’s SunHeart Chamber Music Festival in Yokohama, Japan.

Mr. Borter received his undergraduate degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of Richard Aaron. He continued his education under the tutelage of Steven Doane as a graduate student and scholarship recipient at the Eastman School of Music. Further studies took place in Germany with Christoph Henkel at the Hochschule für Musik-Freiburg. Currently, he is in the Doctor of Musical Arts degree program at the Eastman School of Music and serves as both studio Teaching Assistant to Steven Doane and Instructor of Cello at the University of Rochester. While at Eastman, he was awarded the prestigious Performer’s Certificate.
